Want to have the most impressive dog on your block? Read this article to see how easy it is to train a stubborn dog with a whistle.

Training a stubborn dog is always a greater challenge than training a normal dog but in most cases, once the stubborn dog is well trained, they are some of the most obedient dogs around. A professional trainer, Bart Posey, once told me about one of the most stubborn dogs he ever trained. Bart said he was within days of sending her back to the owner and giving up and all at once a light bulb went off in her head and it all came together. She went on to win the Grand Hunting Retriever Championship title at one of the youngest ages ever. Bart said she turned out to be one of the smartest dogs he had ever trained!

Training a dog using a whistle is so much fun and it is really very easy to do. People are so impressed when they watch you handle your dog with no voice commands and only a whistle.

Since we are talking about training a stubborn dog we will begin by using a long lead rope and a pinch collar. When the pinch collar tightens down on the dogs neck, it pinches slightly and the more resistance the dog offers, the more pain the collar produces. Begin walking your dog and do not use any commands. Let the dog wonder on his own until he reaches the end of the 50 lead. When you dog is at the end of the rope, you just turn and walk in a different direction while giving the dog a gentle tug. If the dog resist, just stop and continue to put a slight tension on the rope. Once the dog starts coming in your direction just keep walking until he goes off in another direction. Just keep repeating this process with no voice commands and reducing the length of you rope as the dog begins to follow you. Within three days of this process, you should have the dog walking right beside you.

Once you have the dog walking beside you, stop, say sit, and blow your whistle one time. To begin with, you may have to push the rear end of your dog down. Have the dog sit still for at least 30 seconds and then start walking again. You can either command the dog to heel when you take off or you can just give a slight tug on the leash. After doing this for a few days, the dog should sit on the whistle without a voice command.

Once the dog understands this whole process you will begin to teach the dog to stay. Sometimes you might use a tree to help in this case. Just have the dog sit and run your lead around a tree. When you walk away and the dog tries to follow, blow your whistle and use the sit command and pull them back with the rope. Since the rope is going around the tree, you will be pulling them backwards and away from you.

After the stubborn dog has learned to heel, sit and stay, it is time to teach them to come to you with the whistle command. After you walk away from the dog for some distance, give the whistle three short burst and use the “here” command. It will not take but a few sessions and the dog will understand that one whistle blow means sit and three short blows means to come.

The next challenge is to stop the dog as he is coming to you by blowing one short loud whistle. If the dog does not stop, go to them where they should have stopped, blow the whistle one time and make them sit at that spot. Just continue this process until you can stop the dog from coming to you with one short blow. Now you have an obedient dog that will heel, sit, stay, and come just by using a whistle.

Sit Stay Fetch (sitsayfetch) is the best eBook I have ever purchased when it comes to learning how to train any kind of a dog. If you like FREE bonuses, you will love this eBook because you get some of the most valuable free stuff with this book that you can imagine. Most of my dog training knowledge comes from this one book. I highly recommend it!

Stubborn dog training can be made easy when you understand a few basic things. Miss these basics and you and your experience will not be good.

Stubborn dog training is not quite as easy as training a normal dog but it can be done and knowing how makes a huge difference. Let me first start this article by identifying some of the breeds that tend to produce stubborn dogs. This might help you in making a decision when buying a dog.

Afghan hound – Airedale Terrier – Akita – Alaskan Malamute – Alaskan Husky – American Pit Bull – American Staffordshire Terrier – Belgian Shepherd – Bernese Mountain Dog – Bloodhound – Border Collie – Borzoi – Bull Terrier – Chinese Shar-Pei – Chow Chow – Doberman – German Shepherd – Giant Schnauzer – Great Dane – Greyhound – Irish Wolfhound – Mastiff – Rhodesian Ridgeback -
Rottweiler – Saluki – Siberian Husky – Weimaraner – Setters

Stubborn dogs are not found in the sporting dogs as often as they are found in the hound and terrier groups. When I think about hounds that pursue game, I think about a dog that is very stubborn until they tree or pursue the game to the end. Many people in my area who have deer dogs sometimes have to wait until season is over to find their dogs.

This is not to say these dogs can not be trained at all but rather to say it will take patience, knowledge, and confidence on the trainer’s part to be successful. These breeds are not well suited for kennels and they need companionship. Many people are taking on the challenge of dog training today because economic conditions has made professional training fees more of a luxury than a necessity. If you decide to train your own dog, you will need a good book or two to learn the valuable secrets that will save you hours of frustration.

Dog training can tend to become a struggle between the trainer and the dog. This is simple to understand when you understand that dogs have a “pack nature” that creates a “dominate nature”. This means they had rather lead than follow! Reminds me of my children.

Here are some tips when working with a stubborn dog…

1- Use a firm voice but be careful not to scream and lose your cool. You must be consistent when working with your dog because like children, they will pick up on inconsistency easily. This creates confusion in their mind. Just imagine if you were the dog and one time you get scolded for doing something wrong and the next time you get a pat on the head.

2- Body language is also important because you want to look confident to your dog and always look them in the eyes. This is somewhat of a domination technique. Always look at the dog when correcting and when praising.

3- One great technique is to use some type of noise maker when your dog is not obeying. These items are simple to make by taking a plastic bottle and dropping a few small rocks in it. If you need to correct the dog by striking them with an object that does not hurt but makes a loud noise, use a large plastic baseball bat. The larger the end on the bat, the bigger the sound. You can also drop a few small pebbles in the end of the bat for additional sound.

4- Using a pinch collar to train your dog to heel, sit, and stay is the fastest easiest method there is. I can train most dogs with this method within one week. It works great and this is the first step in training. I explain this process in an eBook.

Training your own dog will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. You will enjoy showing your dog’s obedience to all of your friends. The sooner you get started the sooner you will achieve success.

How to train a stubborn dog starts with understanding a dog's need as a puppy. For best results, a puppy must be socialized to reduce the possibility of fear.

It all starts with the puppy if possible. The first thing that a puppy needs, is to be socialized, which simply means to allow the puppy to make friends with other dogs and people. It is important to make sure your puppy does not become too aggressive during this procedure. I learned how to train a stubborn dog by reading books and being around other dog trainers. This should be every dog owners first step.

How to train a stubborn dog to heel, which is a term that means to walk by your side, is very easy with the proper tool. Some people may disagree with this but it is the fastest method I have ever used.

1- Just purchase a pinch collar and place on the stubborn dog’s neck.

2- Have a lead attached that is a least 30′ long.

3- Start walking with the puppy and use no verbal commands.

4- When the puppy wanders away, you change directions and give a gentle tug.

5- Continue this process and shorten the length of your lead by 5 feet as needed.

6- Continue this process for 2 to 5 days and the stubborn dog should be heeling like a pro.

I have used this method to train dogs to heel within 2 days. It works great every time.

How to train a stubborn dog not to bark is best done with a bark collar. Many would object to this process but we are not talking about the typical easy-to-train dog. We are talking about how to train a stubborn dog.

One very important lesson I learned on how to train a stubborn dog is to be sure and not break the dog’s spirit. A dog is much like a person in some respects. Usually a stubborn dog just has an excess amount of energy that needs to be channeled in the proper direction. Once you master this technique you have won.

I learned more about training a stubborn dog here than any other source I used.

When you see the world through your dog’s eyes you gain a huge advantage in training them to do what you want. When you understand how your dog thinks and what he needs to know the training program is easy to follow. This was something I had to know more about; CLICK HERE if you think this would help you.

Dog Whispering is a cutting edge, amazing and totally humane training technique. Discover the secrets to making it work for you and your dog.

Would UNLIMITED online based consultations with a dog training team be valuable to you? I’ve never seen anyone else offer this level of service before but if you are interested just click here.

A Well Behaved Lab

If you own a dog and you know life would be much better if you could just correct your dog’s behavior, it really is just as simple as taking action. Dogs really want to please humans but without having some basic commands understood, it is hard for them to please.

These are all questions you will have to answer for yourself but I am sure that having read this far, you are interested in having an obedient dog just like I was. It will require that you educate yourself about dog behavior. It is so much more enjoyable to be around an obedient dog yourself and other people enjoy it as well.

Have you ever been to someone’s home who had unruly children and you couldn’t wait to get away from there. It is the same with dogs, people are not comfortable around a stubborn dog that is constantly jumping on you, licking you, or many other things dogs can do.

Many times it may seem like your dog is behaving poorly just to spite you or annoy you but this may not be the case. What most people don’t know is that there is a cause which triggers the behavior.

One of the most obvious times this happens is when your dog will not stop barking. Really barking for them is like speaking for humans; it’s normal for a dog. It is when the barking is excessive and it effects people living close by!

So understanding why your dog is barking in the first place is step one.

Are they just trying to show they are boss (usually to other dogs).

Is your dog one of the breeds that was bred to bark?

Is your dog barking to warn you or other dogs of danger?

After you understand why your dog is barking you can begin to solve the problem.

“Do Not Reward Your Stubborn Dog For Barking”

When you Yell and Scream at them, they think you are barking along with them!

If your dog is an outside dog and you let them in to stop the barking, what have you just taught them?

What if you react by giving them a treat when they are barking? Again you have just created a worse situation.

Here is where I learned more about understanding my dog and his behavior than any other source I studied. Click here and naturally after viewing the following information I am sure you will agree.

Proper dog obedience training is the key to solving any behavioral problem and building a strong bond with your dog. Without educating yourself, you will never reach the level of success you desire. I’ve bought many books and studied many courses and I believe this is the one and only source anyone would ever need to train a dog.

Anyone can make dog training easy with the right information. The joy of training your own dog will far exceed paying a professional to do the job.

Many people think that dog training is some mysterious concept and that it requires someone who specializes in this area to be able train a dog. That’s not true at all and I want to show you how easy one of the basic commands is to teach. Every dog needs to understand sit and here is how you can train a dog to sit with just a few sessions. Also a shot of Abe as he sits obediently.

Dog Training Made Easy

Stand in front of the puppy with a treat in your hand just in front of his nose.

Go forward with your hand over the puppies head toward his tail while repeating the word sit. Be sure you don’t allow your hand to get too high causing the puppy to jump up.

When the puppy sits, give him the treat and brag on him.

You don’t have to be a dog trainer to do this and after doing this for a couple of days, you will have mastered your first basic command with your puppy. If you are working with a stubborn dog, it may take a bit longer but have fun with it and be relaxed. Your dog can tell if you are nervous.

Many people use a “stay” command after they teach their puppy to sit. It is my opinion that the one command to “sit” should be all that is required. The puppy should be expected to sit until given a command to move. The “release” command is good when you are ready for them to move. Now I will share some personal stories that will have applications to explain why dogs need to obey.

Training Abe to the Hunting Retriever Champion level was one of the most enjoyable times of my life. During this time, Julie Anna, and I would train our dogs together which created a father-daughter relationship that is so special even today.

Julie Anna and Chick

Some of the things we had to teach our dogs to do were sit (which meant until released), heel, lay, fetch, hold (bird in mouth), drop (release bird from mouth), mark (which meant watch the bird fall and remember where it fell), honor, (stay seated while another dog fetched bird), and eight hand signals.

During a hunt test for a hunting retriever champion one of the test required that another dog be brought to the line while my dog was sitting beside me. A bird was launched, shot fired, and the other dog was sent to retrieve the bird. If my dog broke (wouldn’t sit still), he would fail the test. I could not touch Abe, yell at him, or do anything to stop him from breaking. The only thing that would prevent his breaking was the training prior to the hunt. I would have to say that this was the most difficult part of Abe’s training because he was such an aggressive dog. It was all he could do to sit still and not break.

The most amazing thing for other people to watch our dogs do was following our hand signals. I will explain first why this is so important. Let’s say you are duck hunting and your dog is swimming after a duck that you have shot and killed. While he is gone, you shoot another duck and your dog doesn’t see where that duck goes down. When he returns with the first duck, you then have to send him to the next duck using hand signals. Remember, he has no idea where the duck is. The first command is to line him up by your side, point with your hand the direction the duck fell, and command him “back” (which means go straight in the direction you are pointing). When a dog is well trained they will go in a straight line and if they veer off course, you would blow a whistle to stop them. They were trained to turn at the sound of the whistle and watch for a signal. If you can imagine a clock, one o’clock would send them back and slightly to the right as they were facing you. Eleven o’clock would send them back and slightly to the left.

Does a dog ever get too old to learn new tricks? I don’t think so, but I would advise that you get started with your puppy with basic training as soon as you possibly can. I believe that puppies as young as three months old can begin learning with tender treatment.

Taking the day off

If you have questions about training, please send me an email and I will get you an answer as soon as possible.

By the way, a little history lesson here on Abe who is pictured here to the left. His full name is AbesPDQExpress and his grandmother, Candlewoods Tanks A Lot is the only dog in history to win the National Field Trial Championship for 3 years. She won in 1998, 1999, and 2001. I believe those years are correct.

I took Abe duck hunting in Arkansas one time and the guides had their own dogs they used and when I arrived with Abe, I don’t think the guide was too happy. After watching Abe work our first day of hunting, the guide left his dog in the kennel and we used Abe the rest of the week. The guide could not believe what an awesome dog he was. This makes training your own dog worth it!

Do you really have a stubborn dog or could it be that your dog just doesn’t understand English or whatever language you may speak? Do you understand what your dog is saying when it barks?

Chick Wins Hunter Retriever Title

Imagine what it would be like if you knew how to train a stubborn dog to become a well behaved dog around other dogs and people? They would even sit still in your house and not jump on guest!

If this is you then read on because you are just like I was before I came to understand a few things about stubborn dogs!

Did you know that dogs are much like people in that they are always learning. The problem is, many times they are learning BAD habits even as you are teaching them correct habits? If we are not careful in our training process, we could be doing harm.

If you have a disobedient dog that causes you stress or embarrassment then you need HELP now before you enforce bad habits that will be harder to correct.

I hope my sister doesn’t read this blog, but the last time I went to her house, her dog was all over me and my wife! We couldn’t even sit on the furniture without the dog jumping in our laps, jumping over behind us on the back of the couch, and just making our visit miserable. In fact, the next time I went to my mother’s house, she suggested we go over to my sisters, I said NO! Look, just because you love your dog dearly, doesn’t mean other people do as well!

When I discovered ‘Secrets to Dog Training’ and especially a ‘Stubborn Dog’, it helped also to resolve all my dog’s behavior problems quickly and for good. These problems include aggression, biting, digging, barking, chewing, jumping, house training, whining, bolting out the front door, separation anxiety, pulling on the leash, and a lot more.

Here is an example of just one small lesson I learned that made a huge difference in the way I communicated with my dogs.

You should NEVER use the recall word (”COME”, or whatever word you choose) to call your dog to discipline him, correct him, tell him what a bad dog he is, or for any negative reason. Bad deeds MUST be caught IN THE ACT in order to correct. If you still need your dog by you for a negative reason, give him a firm SIT command and go get him.

Why is it important that you train your stubborn dog rather than have someone else do the job? The process of teaching a dog is as much a benefit for the owner as it is for the dog! Having been involved in many “hunt test”, it would be obvious many times that the dog wouldn’t know what to do because the handler didn’t know what they were doing. I have also been hunting with friends who had sent their dogs to a professional handler; they were constantly yelling at the dog and after the hunt they would complain about the sorry job that the trainer did. Knowing what I knew, I realized the dog was not performing well because the owner didn’t have a clue as to how to handle the dog. By the way, thought you might like this shot of me and Abe after winning a ribbon at a hunt test.

Abe Wins Again!

You may not be interested in training hunting dogs but I do believe that the majority of dog owners would enjoy having an obedient dog. It is not as hard as you think and with the right guidance, anyone can do it. Book mark this site and follow my post to learn a few tips.
