It all starts with the puppy if possible. The first thing that a puppy needs, is to be socialized, which simply means to allow the puppy to make friends with other dogs and people. It is important to make sure your puppy does not become too aggressive during this procedure. I learned how to train a stubborn dog by reading books and being around other dog trainers. This should be every dog owners first step.
How to train a stubborn dog to heel, which is a term that means to walk by your side, is very easy with the proper tool. Some people may disagree with this but it is the fastest method I have ever used.
1- Just purchase a pinch collar and place on the stubborn dog’s neck.
2- Have a lead attached that is a least 30′ long.
3- Start walking with the puppy and use no verbal commands.
4- When the puppy wanders away, you change directions and give a gentle tug.
5- Continue this process and shorten the length of your lead by 5 feet as needed.
6- Continue this process for 2 to 5 days and the stubborn dog should be heeling like a pro.
I have used this method to train dogs to heel within 2 days. It works great every time.
How to train a stubborn dog not to bark is best done with a bark collar. Many would object to this process but we are not talking about the typical easy-to-train dog. We are talking about how to train a stubborn dog.
One very important lesson I learned on how to train a stubborn dog is to be sure and not break the dog’s spirit. A dog is much like a person in some respects. Usually a stubborn dog just has an excess amount of energy that needs to be channeled in the proper direction. Once you master this technique you have won.
